(Beijing May 31) The "Good Luck Beijing" 2008 Marathon Swimming Olympic Women's Qualification concluded at Beijing's Shunyi Olympic Rowing-Canoeing Park today with another 11 swimmers qualifying for the Olympic Games in August.
China's Fang Yanqiao, who won as the continental champion in the last qualification event in April, commented after watching the race that open water swimming was more like a war than swimming in the pool, because the athletes would often have physical contact with one another, right from the beginning of the race, while vying for a better route.
As there were not many swimmers today it was not so obvious, the 2008 Olympics qualifier added, saying she will strive to polish her skills in the next two months for the upcoming Games, which would be a "real battle."
According to FINA's regulations, athletes who have qualified for the Olympics are not allowed to compete in this event. However, FINA has agreed that during this tournament some of them including Fang and some foreign swimmers have a trial swim here to get a feel of this Olympic venue.
